Lawn mowing, on its own or as part of the garden.

Most people have me do the lawns while I am there for the garden, which is the cheapest way to get them done. If you only want the lawns mown and edged, I do that too, with a one-hour minimum. Either way it is the same hourly rate as everything else.

I am not the cheapest way to get a lawn cut, and I am not trying to be. The mow-and-go operators run on a fixed price and will beat me on a big flat lawn. What you get from me is one person who does the whole garden, edges included, and notices when the lawn has a problem rather than driving over it.

My mower is electric, so it is quiet enough for a Tuesday morning in Fendalton. Long grass gets the line trimmer first, then the mower. Anything bigger than a typical quarter-acre section is usually better done by a mow-and-go operator with a ride-on, and I will say so if yours is.

What a visit covers

Mowing, with the clippings caught by default or mulched if you prefer
Edges along paths, beds and fences
Paths and driveway swept
Clippings into your green bin, or bagged and taken away

How often

Most gardens on the west side want a visit every two weeks through spring and summer, when the grass and the weeds are moving. A simpler section with more paving than planting can go to every three weeks, and through winter once a month keeps things in hand. Those are suggestions. The frequency gets set around your garden and what you want from it. Lawns in spring want cutting every two weeks; monthly is enough from June to August.

A regular visit is usually two to three hours. The first one is often longer, because the garden has to be brought back to a state a shorter visit can hold. After that it never gets to the point where it needs a rescue.

If you would rather start with a one-off tidy up and see how it goes, that is fine. A regular slot after that is set up around your preferences, and you can change it or pause it by text.

Every service, lawns and hedges included, is charged at the same hourly rate for the time I am on site.

*I am under the GST threshold, so no GST is added. That could change at any time; if it does, GST goes on top of the rate and this page changes first.

How this works

There are two ways to start. Send me a few photos and I reply within 24 hours with the hours the job will take. Or book a visit straight away and I sort the scope with you on the day.

1. Get in touch. Send photos through the estimate form, text them to 028 416 1624, or book a visit online.
2. Agree the hours. From photos, I tell you the range of hours within 24 hours. If you have booked straight away, I look at the garden when I arrive and agree the hours with you before I start. Either way, if the job turns out bigger than expected I tell you before I keep going, and if you have a set budget I work inside it and do the most useful things first.
3. I turn up and do the work. A text the day before and another when I am on my way. The clippings leave with me, and the invoice is for the hours worked, with a photo of the garden as I left it if you were not home.

Waste. Everything I cut leaves with me unless you would rather it went in your green bin. Removal is priced per bag in the Prices table.

What I don't do

I am a gardener, so a few jobs go to someone else. If yours needs one of these, I will say so up front.

FAQ

Why not a fixed price per mow?

Because I charge for time on everything, which keeps the billing simple and easy to check. The same lawn takes about the same time each visit, so the invoice settles into a number you can predict. I am a gardener rather than a lawnmowing service, so there are no fixed-price lawn packages, and mowing is usually part of looking after the whole garden rather than a job on its own. Mow-and-go operators are cheaper, and they do not do the garden.

Can you do just the lawns, every fortnight?

Yes. It is a regular visit with a one-hour minimum.

Do you catch or mulch?

Catch by default, because most people prefer the look and it is the right call when the grass is long or wet. Mulching is better for the lawn at some times of year, and I will suggest it when it is.

What if the lawn is wet or muddy?

Mowing is best done when the ground is not waterlogged. If mowing would damage the lawn, I may postpone the mow, and I will tell you. Any other work booked for that visit usually goes ahead as normal.

What about long grass?

Line trimmer first, then the mower. It makes a lot more clippings than a normal cut, and nothing gets left in a heap.

Do you fertilise or spray lawns?

Not as standard. Fertiliser or a weed-and-feed is available if you ask for it. Lawn renovation, returfing and new lawns go to a lawn specialist.
